Rollback Netcode

Make a game with rollback, they said. It will be fun, they said.

Sorry for the late newsletter, we’ve had quite the busy past month! We’ve been working hard at fixing our desyncs in our networking system, and wanted to get them ironed out before posting. That being said, I’m glad to announce that we have had multiple successful network tests since around mid-april, and are finally able to make some larger changes to adding more content to our combat alpha!

The summarized story of why the networking is so difficult is because we want to have rollback netcode, which is one of the most seamless online experiences, but at the cost of being fairly difficult to implement (especially for us, it was our first time!). As always, thanks for being patient with us, and we can’t wait to ramp up more content on the combat alpha. As we reach more milestones, we may reach out to some of you for testing over the next few months.

Physical Rewards

  • We’re starting to ramp up towards finally getting the physical rewards out. Later this month you will get an email from BackerKit finalizing the process we started a while back for collecting shipping costs.

Progress

  • Jon has spent almost the entirety of the past 2 months with Corey hacking away at solving our rollback netcode issues. It was a huge effort, but we’ve finally been able to have multiple successful playtests without desyncs as listed above! He’s also started adding in some of the new moves detailed out in our combat design documents for each mythren and testing them in our rollback system. Jon also got a great new job a couple of weeks ago which stabilizes his schedule, and should be beneficial to the development of Mythren!

  • Drake has finished up work on Dialogue portraits for Graccon and Kaiya, and is now working on updating combat designs with Jon and updating art for each of our old mythren to include lighting! Check out the updates below!

  • Javon worked on the details of PureRefs for each culture: clothing styles, job types for culture, Food for Culture. He added descriptions of what he is going for for each of those within the document. Jacon addressed feedback on different documents, and reviewed and altered the culture details based on feedback

  • Aidan has finished up a lot of work for the prototype of our new map system. He’s implemented locations, in-game date specific events, and tools for our designers to be able to easily add content to our map. Currently he’s finalizing the shop system that will be available in different locations on the maps as well as nailing out some kinks with starting conversations while in the map system.

  • Hallie has been working on concept art for our training grounds on the home island. This includes a Jump Rope mini game design, design sketches for Flow Balls, wood poll and targets. Is also adjusting the concept design for the house on the Home Island. After receiving feedback on those items, Hallie is working to alter the concept designs to create a final concept for those areas.
